AppFest Demo FAQs
Dust or Magic Children's AppFest is designed so that any person with any budget can share their ideas with the attendees of the Dust or Magic Institute. This is a FREE and PUBLIC exchange of ideas, although we like for you to register in advance by calling 908-284-0404 (9-3 EST) or sending and email to
1) What kind of venue should we prepare for? Are we doing informal demos at a table for people who stop by or are we giving a formal presentation?
ANSWER: Informal demos only. Have one or more devices that you can hand people for them to try. Don't prepare anything canned. You'll be given a chair -- that's it -- and a balloon to mark your spot. Be prepared to set up a station and pass out a one page flyer that describes your app. You can give away preview code at your discretion. Kids are welcome. AppFest is about trying, not about selling. Your work should speak for itself.
And it is a "festival" of children's apps. That means "fun."
2) How many apps will be demoing during that time?
ANSWER: People come and go, but in general it's not a large number -- around 10 -- at any given time. We never know, however.
3) Will there be WiFi in the room?
ANSWER: Absolutely. There is no password. Still, if you have something that depends on Wi-Fi, it helps to have a backup plan.
4) Should we bring signage and if so, what size?
ANSWER: Don't bring signs. Just a one page flyer and a few devices that you can use to demo your app.
5) Should we bring hand-outs?
ANSWER: Yes but limit it to one page. You can also pass out business cards. The important thing is the substance of your programming.
6) Will there be food?
ANSWER: We firmly believe that you can't have technology without pizza. But we won't have pizza -- rather light snacks and soft drinks. Also if you bring kids, make sure to bring snacks and drinks for them.
7) How long can we stay?
ANSWER: We ask you to depart 30 minutes before the first session. For Dust or Magic 2011 in Lamberville, AppFest runs from 1 PM to 3:30 PM on Sunday, Nov. 6.
8) Can I bring swag or give-aways?
ANSWER: Sure. There is a handout table that is also free and public; Any person can put a catalog, flyer, study or stuffed monkey. We recycle stuff at the end of the event or give away things to the hotel staff. Note that the Dust or Magic audience prefers research and white papers over swag. Demo codes are highly desired.
9) Where, exactly is it?
ANSWER: In the fall, it is 11 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ in the lobby of the Inn at Lamberville Station. There is plenty of parking in the lower lot, by the river. Tell the parking attendant the words "dust or magic" to get in.
